Gotham by Gaslight bắt đầu vào thế kỷ 19 khi cha mẹ của Bruce Wayne bị sát hại và anh bị ám ảnh bởi hình tượng đàn dơi bay trên xác cha mẹ mình. Sau một thời gian theo học tại London, Bruce trở về Gotham và bắt đầu khoác lên mình lớp áo của Batman để tuần tra trên từng con phố tranh tối tranh sáng.. Cùng lúc ấy thành phố bất ngờ xuất hiện hàng loạt vụ giết người, vô tình khiến Bruce Wayne trở thành nghi phạm bị săn lùng bởi cảnh sát. Ít ai biết đó chính là tên giết người Jack the Ripper khét tiếng, kẻ không hiểu vì sao đã theo chân Bruce trở về đây...
